Most of the web work for public facing websites is performed in one of our development environments, such as Backstage. After work, every night, regardless of weekends or holidays, completed work in the development environment “goes live” to the public server cehd.umn.edu
Development environments are extremely handy for previewing work in progress, especially large projects as these files can stay in the development environment as long as necessary by setting the files to not publish.
Only people on the University network can view work in a development environment, and they must have a direct URL to view the work, search engines do not work on development servers. It is important to never distribute or publish a development environment URL, these pages are not and cannot be made available to the public.
If you are unsure if a URL, also known as a web address, is a development environment or live URL, please do not hesitate to contact the web team for assistance.
