University of Minnesota: President’s Emerging Scholars

The President’s Emerging Scholars Program within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota serves as a critical access point for students of color, low-income students, first-generation college students, and other students whose academic records, extracurricular activities, and life experiences are uneven but suggest a high potential for success in the program. Students are required to participate in the program as part of their condition for admission to the University.  

Community engagement activities

All PES students are required to take an introductory course, CLA 1005, which is aimed at facilitating their transition into college. Students in this course are given the opportunity to engage in community service as part of the course. Students who participate in the service option of the class are required to complete a minimum of 2-3 hours of service in a community organization each week over the semester, for a total of at least 20 hours. Students can choose from a variety of different activities and community placement sites. 

Is this program available to underrepresented students?

  • Students from all background who meet the criteria for PES are eligible to be admitted. 
  • Underrepresented is defined as: low income, first generation, disabilities, and racial/ethnic minorities.
